EPA today

The European Psychiatric Association (EPA) formerly known as the Association of European Psychiatrists (AEP) is the largest international association of psychiatrists in Europe, with active members in as many as 57 countries. EPA is considered today as the main association of individual members that can speak for European psychiatry: it includes among its members leading European experts, it covers interests of psychiatrists in academia and in practice, it deals with psychiatry and its related disciplines and it focuses on the improvement of care for the mentally ill as well as on the development of professional excellence. 2008 is a turning point in the history of EPA with Ambitious projects: the launching of the EPA Academia for Excellence in European Psychiatry and the establishment of the EPA European Platform of Psychiatrists on an annual basis.

The EPA Mission

The mission of the EPA is to improve the quality of mental health care throughout Europe, by:
  • enhancing the standard of psychiatric education and training
  • promoting excellence in psychiatric research
  • encouraging progress in psychiatric clinical practice
  • supporting the development of public health policies relevant to mental
  • health and the improvement of ethical standards of psychiatric care
  • disseminating information about psychiatric research and practice
  • collaborating and networking with national psychiatric associations
  • favouring professional exchange between European psychiatrists
  • accompanying the young psychiatrists in their professional development
  • representing European Psychiatry in the framework of the various European Institutions and as a key partner to the various national and international psychiatric associations
