 PRAGUE'S MOST BEAUTIFUL VIEWS
Prague Castle
Despite
many wars and fires, Prague Castle has grown into a unique architectural
complex, the largest of its kind in Europe.
A visit to this medieval castle is a must for all visitors to Prague.
It contains the Gothic Saint Vitus Cathedral, a monastery, several towers,
palaces and Golden Lane.
Seat of the President of the Czech Republic, it serves as the historical
and political centre of both city and state.
The Old Town Hall Tower
The
Astronomical Clock on the Old Town Hall Tower dates back to the beginning
of the 15th century.
The highlight of this beautiful construction is the hourly procession
of the Twelve Apostles; every hour on the hour, a small trap door opens
and Christ marches out ahead of his disciples, while the skeleton of
death tolls the bell to a defiant statue of a Turk.
The Old Town Bridge Tower
One
of the most beautiful Gothic towers in Europe, heralding the entrance to
Charles Bridge and guarding any approach from either side, is the blackened
and aged-looking Bridge Tower.
It is part of the old fortification system in Prague.
The Lesser Town Bridge Tower
The
taller of the two towers on the Mala Strana (Lesser Town) side of Charles
Bridge was built in the second half of the 15th century under King George
of Podebrady, following the example of the tower on the opposite side of
the bridge.
It is connected by a gate with Judith Tower, the only remaining part
of the Romanesque bridge destroyed by flood in 1342.
The tower exhibition is dedicated to the eventful history of the bridge.
St. Vitus Cathedral Tower
This Gothic cathedral, the spiritual symbol of the Czech state, was
founded by Jan Lucembursky (John of Luxembourg) and his sons Karel and
Jan Jindrich.
Begun in 1344 by Mathias Arras and Petr Parler, upon the site of a 10th
century rotunda, it took nearly 6 centuries to complete, with the final
phase of construction only taking place during 1873-1929.
The cathedral contains underground tombs of Czech kings.
Charles Bridge
Prague's
13th century Charles Bridge is normally packed with people all day long,
especially during the spring and summer months.
Try early morning for a less crowded walk, or, alternatively, enjoy
a romantic evening stroll for a fairytale panorama of the Prague skyline,
dominated by the awe inspiring Prague Castle.
Charles Bridge is the main pedestrian route linking the Old Town with
Mala Strana, and then onto Prague Castle itself. During the day, expect
hundreds of souvenir stands and an endless variety of street musicians.
