In 1991 the most remarkable South Bohemian town Ceské Krumlov was added to the
UNESCO list of World Cultural Heritage as a uniquely well-preserved historical
town. Its castle (second largest in the country) was founded in the 13th
century. The most remarkable alterations of the castle are the heritage of the
Baroque period: the castle's Baroque Theatre, sprawling Castle Gardens, Picture
Gallery, Music and Masquerade Halls.
Participants will also visit the metropolis of South Bohemia Ceské Budëjovice.
The city was founded by Czech king Premysl Otakar II in 1265. Participants will
admire the square, one of the largest in Europe, the houses with arcades, the
Baroque Town Hall, the Bishop's Palace, St. Nicolas Cathedral and the 72m high
Black Tower with a beautiful view of the surroundings.
The tour will continue to Hluboká nad Vltavou, one of the most imposing
chateaux in Bohemia. It houses rich collections of tapestries, wood carvings,
china, pictures and old weapons. It is surrounded by a large English park.
On the way back there are two possibilities of places to visit - Písek or
Tábor.
Písek is a royal town founded in the 13th century. Its castle with a Baroque
town hall from the 18th century in the inner courtyard was built at the same
time. Písek has the oldest preserved bridge in Bohemia. It is an early Gothic
stone bridge from the first half of the 13th century. The town is dominated by
the deanery church with a 71 meter-high tower.
Tábor was founded by the Hussites in 1420. It was named after the biblical
mountain Tábor. Only the gate, once a part of the town hall, has survived. The
Jordán lake, which has the oldest dam in Bohemia, is situated in the heart of
the town. The Klokoty monastery and the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin
Mary belong among the places of pilgrimage.
