Educational Course 4

Basic Neurourology

Chair: Helmut Madersbacher, Austria
Speakers: John Hessakkers, The Netherlands; Jean-Jacques Wyndaele, Belgium; Piotr Radziszewski, Poland

Aims & Objectives:
The main focus will be on the every-day care of patients with neurogenic bladder and on the therapy which is available in every centre. Having participated in this course, which will also include case presentations, you should have a basic knowledge on neurogenic lower urinary tract dysfunction, its pathophysiology and its diagnostic work-up, moreover you should be aware what can be offered to the individual patient nowadays.

Target Audience:
This course is for doctors, nurses and physiotherapists, who are interested in Neurourology. We assume, that the participants have no or only little experience with this subspeciality.

Workshop 14

Update on the Management of Overactive Bladder Syndrome

Chair: Hashim Hashim, UK
Speakers: Paul Abrams, UK; Marcus Drake, UK; Catherine DuBeau, USA; Dudley Robinson, UK

Aims & Objectives:
It will look at the management of OAB including diagnosis and treatment. With the introduction of many new treatment modalities, this workshop will discuss all the treatment options including bladder training, pelvic floor exercises, oral pharmacotherapy, invasive pharmacotherapy, neuromodulation and surgical options as well as potential future treatment options. It will also suggest a treatment plan using evidence-based medicine and the International Consultation on Incontinence guidelines.

After attending this workshop, the participants should be able to appreciate the impact of OAB on society and quality of life, assess patients with LUTS appropriately, choose and initiate the most appropriate treatment for patients with OAB using the ICI guidelines and evidence-based medicine.

Target Audience:
All those interacting with OAB including urologists, gynaecologists, geriatricians, nurses, continence advisors, physiotherapists and industry.

Chair: Paulo Palma, Brazil
Speakers: Elisabetta Costantini, Italy; Miriam Dambros, Brazil; Gamal Ghoniem, USA; Bernard Jacquetin, France

Aims & Objectives:
This workshop is based on tridimentional models to facilitate the understanding of the anatomical basis for contemporary minimally invasive pelvic organs prolapse repair. This course also offers a comprehensive tridimentional basis for pelvic floor muscular training as well.

Target Audience:
This workshop is for surgeons wishing to further understanding the applied pelvic floor anatomy related to minimally invasive procedures and for physiotherapist involved with Pelvic Floor Muscular Training.

The Urothelium in Health and Disease

Chair: Christopher Fry, UK
Speakers: Lori Birder, USA; Anthony Kanai, USA; Karen McCloskey, UK; Alexander Roosen, Germany

Aims & Objectives:
The aim of the workshop is to summarise the latest information regarding the roles of the urothelium as: a sensory structure in the lower urinary tract; and as a barrier between urine and underlying tissues.  The workshop will describe current hypotheses regarding the physiological basis of urge and the pathological basis of urgency and the overactive bladder, as well as the basis of treatments used to reduce these pathological conditions.

Target Audience:
Scientists, urologists, gynaecologists and non-medical health workers interested in the physiological and pathophysiological basis of urge, urgency and pain in the urinary and genitary tracts.

Workshop 17

Pelvic Floor Ultrasound

Please note that W17 and W20 are being sold as two separate workshops - delegates can choose to attend either one or both workshops

Six international speakers will cover imaging of bladder and urethra, of the anorectum, and of suburethral slings. We will also cover postoperative findings after mesh surgery, the use of 4D ultrasound for axial plane imaging and ultrasound imaging for the physiotherapist. A special focus will be the issue of levator trauma and how to identify and quantify it.

Target Audience:
Obstetricians/gynaecologists, urologists, urogynaecologists, radiologists, physiotherapists, colorectal surgeons

Workshop 18

A New Era for the Approach to Chronic Pelvic Pain Syndromes

Chair: Jeannette Potts, USA
Speakers: Ragi Doggweiler, USA; Christopher Payne, USA; Alain Watier, Canada

Aims & Objectives:
A functional somatic syndrome (FSS) is defined as a constellation of symptoms, which are frequently persistent and distressing, and, after appropriate medical assessment, cannot be explained in terms of a conventionally defined medical disease. Chronic Prostatitis/Pelvic Pain Syndrome (CP) and Interstitial Cystitis/Painful Bladder Syndrome (IC) are easily characterised in this fashion and are frequently associated with other similarly frustrating disorders such as Fibromyalgia and Irritable Bowel Syndrome. We thoughtfully present evidence to support our promotion of a systemic and biopsychosocial approach for the evaluation and treatment of patients suffering from pelvic pain disorders.

Target Audience:
Healthcare providers treating men and women with chronic urological, gastrointestinal or pelvic pain disorders

Workshop 19

The Challenge of Inhibitory Therapies for Overactive Bladder

Chair: Massimo Porena, Italy
Speakers: Francisco Cruz, Portugal; Prokar Dasgupta, UK; Antonella Giannantoni, Italy; Massimo Lazzeri, Italy

Aims & Objectives:
The workshop format will combine exhaustive presentations with extended periods of opening discussion. The workshop will be structured in distinct sections: physiopathology of micturition reflex and clinical applications of basic science evidence with special regard to botulinum toxin, nociceptin/orphanin-NOP receptor inhibitory system, new strategies to deliver drugs.
It is not surprisingly that, given the lack of high quality evidence for many of these issues, there could be no “consensus” on a number of points, but it is nonetheless to offer urologists, gynaecologists, neurologists and other health specialists useful insights and recommendations on the treatment of overactive bladder in the near future.

Target Audience:
Urologists, gynaecologists, neurologists, geriatrics
