PALERMO CITY TOUR - HALF DAY GUIDED EXCURSION

A short visit to the outstanding ancient monuments and magnificent buildings of the town: the Duomo (built in the 12th C. by the Normans) with the tombs of the Norman, Swabian and Aragonese kings; the Normans' Palace (a royal residence since Norman times, - now the seat of the Regional Parliament) and the adjacent Cappella Palatina (a jewel of Norman art with the splendid Arab honeycomb ceiling and the Byzantine mosaics); the church of S. Giovanni of Eremites (built on the site of an Arab mosque with its most charming feature - the five red domes, the cloister and the magnificently luxuriant garden); the Martorana Church.

TUESDAY, APRIL 3, 2001

MONREALE - HALF DAY GUIDED EXCURSION

The town of Monreale owes its fame to the presence of the Duomo with the enclosed Benedettini Cloisters, a miracle of twelfth century architecture and multi-coloured design. Constructed by William II and being representative of three cultures - Islamic, Byzantine and Romanesque - the Duomo and its cloisters are one of the most advanced creations of the Italian medieval period. The internal walls of the nave and the apse are covered with mosaics on a gold background from which the famous representation of Christ Pantocrator rises.
