Press Release

Berlin, 8 December 2000

The first Congress on Research and Development in Palliative Care was held from the 7th to 10th of December in Berlin.
More than 350 participant from 40 countries took part in the discussions on problems to face in pallaitive care. With the legalisation of Euthanasia in the Netherlands in the last days this Congress has become still more actual. The research for recommendations for symptom controll in patients with advanced disease and in dying patients, problem with communication and the discussion of ethical problems are the main topics discussed by the researchers in this conference. Palliative care nor postpones nor hastens death but aims to give the patient the best quality of life possible until death.

Even though palliative care has developed rapidly in the last years in Europe with an increasing number of inpatient and outpatient services, there is still a lot to do. Only further improvements availability and in the quality of palliative care delivery will ensure that patients do not have to ask for euthanasia.
