EUROPEAN ATHEROSCLEROSIS SOCIETY
The European Atherosclerosis Society, founded in 1964, is devoted to advancing knowledge
of the causes, natural history, treatment and prevention of atherosclerosis. Currently
composed of researchers, in both basic and clinical science, membership is open to
physicians and scientists working in Europe and in neighboring countries. Corresponding
members, active in the field of atherosclerosis research, are accepted from around the
world.
Major activities of the European Atherosclerosis Society include the organization of large
annual congresses, smaller scientific workshops and other forums for professional interaction
and education. The quality of European research in atherosclerosis depends on the
education and enthusiasm of young researchers in the field. A major goal of the society
is to support these young scientists, showcase their work, assist them with grants for travel
and support them so that they can participate in EAS activities and bring in new ideas for
the future. The society runs a Summer School for young scientists and presents Young
Investigator awards at each EAS Congress. This year EAS will also give prizes for outstanding
Clinical and Basic Research published by young scientists and clinicians and a new award
for more senior scientists, named after an out-standing pioneer in the field, Nikolai
Anitschkow (1885-1964). The new award is intended to recognize outstanding research
in Atherosclerosis and linked metabolic disturbances.
The EAS collaborates with other European scientific societies on joint educational symposia,
guidelines task forces and other projects of mutual interest within the field of cardiovascular
research. The society Journal 'Atherosclerosis' is a well respected peer reviewed journal
issued monthly and distributed worldwide. Since its inception, the EAS has held 76
Congresses and various Workshops in numerous European countries. The last Congresses
have been held in Greece, Switzerland, Italy, Netherlands, Israel, France, Austria, Spain,
Czech Republic and Finland.
An Executive Committee, to which members are elected for a term of three years, takes
care of the Society's daily activities. Society activities are supported by the membership
fees of individual and corporate members, as well as by public and private sponsors. A
serious partnership between academia and industry is a necessary part of scientific
development in this century. The EAS actively includes companies in the society as
corporate members who are not only partners in the organization of congresses but also
work with EAS to support research and educational programs. Further information on
membership can be found on the society website:
