EFNS2006Edinburgh Citytour & Edinburgh Castle
Friday, September 1, 2006
Leaving Glasgow in the morning we drive to Edinburgh, Scotland’s Capital City. The transfer time will be approximately one hour.

Edinburgh really is two cities. We have the Old Town, which is built around the Castle and down along the Royal Mile to Holyrood Palace. The style here is very traditional and rather medieval with high tenement houses and very narrow lanes, so called ‘closes’.
In contrast there is the New Town which was built in the classic Georgian Style, at the end of the 18th century, thus to handle the constant stream of increasing population and business activities.
We will be walking through the 16th century Old Town, steeped in history with the Grassmarket where criminals were hanged in the olden days. Also the cobbled High Street, were historic building can be found such as St Giles Cathedral, the City Chambers and John Knox House.
Visit Edinburgh Castle, one of the most famous castles in the world. The castle stands on an extinct volcano, which has been a fortress from time immemorial. The oldest of castle buildings is the tiny 12th century chapel dedicated to St Margaret in the Old Palace you can see the sparkling Scottish Crown Jewels.
In the afternoon we will see in contrast the elegant tree-lined crescents of the 18th century Georgian New Town, created by James Craig and built by Robert Adam. Charlotte Square at the west end of George Street is a fine architectural example of its time. Also Princes Street, the city's main thoroughfare, with its many shops, Scott Monument and at the east end - Calton Hill. On the south side, between the street and the castle rock was the old Nor' Loch, which was drained in 1760 to form the now peaceful gardens. Return back to Glasgow later that day.

Glasgow Art & Architecture
Saturday, September 2 & Monday, September 4, 2006
Glasgow, situated by the River Clyde, is Scotland's largest city and has won the titles “European City of Culture” and “City of Architecture”. The city has a fascinating trading history and was once the second city of the empire after London.

Today’s sightseeing tour will look in particular at the influence of Charles Rennie Mackintosh (1868 – 1928), the famous Glasgow-born designer and architect. Mackintosh is renowned world wide for his innovative and influential style, which helped shape European Art Nouveau.
Mackintosh was a prominent influence in the development of the ‘Glasgow Style’ and made his mark on public buildings, private houses, and tearooms – with the majority of these existing within the city of Glasgow.
However, he also created unique furniture designs, some of which are shown at visitor attractions, which we will visit.
During the tour we will visit at the Glasgow School of Art and also at the House For An Art Lover, which is set in beautiful parkland adjacent to walled gardens.
