Abstract Body
Neonatal shigellosis is a rare disease in most
developed countries.
The source of infection, who may be asymptomatic,
is usually the mother or a family member.
The disease is important because it mimics other
more common neonatal conditions and may therefore be easily missed. In the
neonatal age group, severe complications and mortality are twice as common as
in older children.
It may present as gastroenteritis, a dysenteric
colitis or with generalised sepsis.
Strict isolation and hygiene is critical since the disease is highly
cross-infective to staff, family and other patients.
With early and correct treatment the prognosis is
good but a delay may lead to serious or fatal complications. We present the
cases of 2 neonates with Shigellosis, one with Sh. sonnei and the second with
Sh. flexneri.
