The
Danish Government established Statens Serum Institute in 1902. At that time,
diphtheria was a serious threat to the population of Denmark and the initial
task was to manufacture adequate supplies of diphtheria antitoxin from horse
serum. Activities were soon extended to diagnosis of infectious diseases,
epidemiology, microbiology, and vaccine production. Based on a strong research
tradition within these fields, Statens Serum Institute has over a time span of
almost 100 years gained experience and expertise in combining these disciplines.
By further expanding into immunology and molecular biology, Statens Serum
Institute has obtained a unique combination of knowledge from which the present
core competencies are nourished.
