The European Society of Regional Anaesthesia was founded in Heidelberg, Germany in 1980 to further regional Anaesthesia in Europe. The first congress was held in Edinburgh in 1982 and since that year the society has gone from strength to strength, with a current membership of over 2000 throughout Europe. The society is still growing, and has now established a strong track record with 26 Annual Congresses and of course our forthcoming 27th in Genoa.

The scientific standard at the annual ESRA congress is now recognised as one of the best in Europe, and as a result carries a high rating with the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education, who now assign credit hours to all ESRA congresses.

The annual congress has taken place in a different European city each year, with 1995 the first year in an Eastern European city, Prague. The Board of ESRA plan to expand membership in Eastern Europe in line with its aim of improving and standardizing the level of Regional Anaesthesia throughout Europe.

Apart from the annual ESRA Congress, the society holds eight to ten zonal meetings each year focusing on hands-on workshops and the scientific needs of the particular zone. ESRA GOALS

	To associate and affiliate into one organization all anaesthesiologists and other physicians and scientists who are engaged in, or interested in, the techniques of regional anaesthesia for surgery, obstetrics, pediatrics and pain control.
	To encourage specialisation and research in these areas.
	To promote and sponsor courses and hands-on workshops.
	To encourage the teaching of regional anaesthetic procedures in anaesthesiology training programmes.
	To develop and further the knowledge of safe techniques for providing surgical and obstetrical anaesthesia with local anaesthetic agents and for producing diagnostic and therapeutic blocks with local and lytic agents for the management of pain.
