Department of Ophthalmology Thessaloniki GREECE Hippokrateion Hospital.

Purpose: The intra operative use of Mitomycin-C inhibits fibroplast proliferation and fibrous connective tissue formation, which seals the filtering site and contributes to better aqueous outflow after trabeculectomy.

Patients and Methods: Mitomycin-C solution 0.2mg/ml was applied for one minute between posterior conjunctival surface and selera in 60 eyes with refractory glaucomas.

Results: I.O.P. controlled in 52 eyes (39 eyes without treatment and 13 eyes with treatment) while it was uncontrolled in 8 eyes for a 10 –33 month follow-up period. Mild to severe complications were observed in 16 eyes.

Conclusions: Mitomycin-C used in low concentration and for a short period of time contributes to a successful trabeculectomy outcome in cases of refractory glaucoma.
