Deep sclerectomy is a surgical procedure for glaucoma patients suffering from elevated intraocular pressure in spite of maximal tolerated medical therapy. The advantage of this procedure, compared to the classical trabeculectomy is the reduction of severe postoperative complications. The success of deep sclerectomy demands the preservation of the trabeculodescemetic membrane which forms part of the floor of the schlem's canal. Despite the importance of its preservation, the trabeculodescemetic membrane can be perforated during deep scelectomy in 10-15% of the cases. In order to avoid this complication we develop a technique to improve its visualization, by staining of its membrane with Gencian Violet. The technique and results of deep sclerectomy by this modality will be presented and discussed.
