The main mechanism that causes intraocular pressure(IOP)rises in pseudoexfoliation syndrome is remained controversial. In an effort to clarify this problem, we investigated the correlations between angle width, degree of angle pigmentation, amount of exfoliative material and IOP in 60 patients with unilateral peudoexfoliation syndrome. 21 patients had glaucoma in their eyes with pseudoexfoliation whereas the rest had no glaucoma in either of their eyes.A significant correlation was found between the degree of angle pigmentation and the amount of exfoliative material and IOP in eyes with exfoliative glaucoma. In nonglaucomatous eyes with pseudoexfoliation, only the amount of exfoliative material and the degree of angle pigmentation were correlated. Our results suggested that among the three factors investigated in the present study, the degree of angle pigmentation might be the main risk factor for exfoliative glaucoma.
