Professor Kari BØ

Professor Kari Bø is a physical therapist and an exercise scientist at the Norwegian School of Sport Sciences, department of Sports Medicine, Oslo Norway. She holds a Msci from 1984 on Body posture and a PhD on Pelvic floor muscle training from 1990. She was appointed fulltime professor of exercise science at the Norwegian University of Sport and Physical Education, Oslo, Norway in 1997. She was elected vice chancellor of the University from 1999-2001. She was the first vice president of the International Organization of Physical Therapists in Women’s Health, WCPT 1999-2007, and has been the vice president of the Norwegian Council for Physical Activity for 8 years, giving direct advice to the Norwegian Minister of Health on physical activity, fitness and health. In addition, dr. Bø has been the vice president of the Norwegian Physiotherapy Association subgroup for Sport Physiotherapy 2003-2007.

Kari Bø has written numerous scientific papers on pelvic floor dysfunction, treatment of incontinence and low back pain, measurement methodology, fitness and women’s health. In addition, she has published numerous articles, videos/dvds and books about the pelvic floor, fitness, pregnancy and physical activity, and women’s health in general for the lay public. Her main area of interest and research is pelvic floor function and dysfunction, exercise science and women’s health. Kari is in the Cochrane review group for conservative treatment for incontinence. She has been member of the first two International consultations on incontinence (conservative treatment) and she is appointed member of the WCPT “Evidence based practice advicory group”. She is elected member of the ICS scientific committee. She has written several systematic reviews on pelvic floor muscle training and electrical stimulation. Kari is on the editorial board and reviewer on several international scientific journals, member of research committees, teaches methodology to master and PhD students and holds the position as the leader of the “Committee for PhD Education” at the Norwegian School of Sport Sciences, and is appointed member of the Program committee for Clinical Research at the Norwegian Research Council. She has been a visiting fellow to Stanford University, USA, and a guest professor at the University of Dunedin, New Zealand, University of Melbourne, Australia, and the Ministry of Health, Singapore. She is considered the lead international expert of pelvic floor muscle training and is a popular presenter all over the world.

Kari is a former dancer and rhythmical gymnast, and was Nordic champion in team rhythmical gymnastics. Together with Eva-Lill Kamhaug, she has developed the Norwegian Aerobic Fitness Model (Gymnastikk i tiden) which is a 60 minutes fitness class for women aiming at improving cardiorespiratory fitness, motor learning and control (including balance, posture and ergonomics), flexibility, muscle strength and relaxation. She teaches this class twice a week at her homeplace. In addition she was a sport model in Karin Sand’s Trend Show for many years presenting Norwegian ski wear for the Norwegian Export Council in e.g.  USA, Germany and France.
