The 2nd International Forum on Pain Medicine, Guadalajara, Mexico, May 25-28, 2006 Medical Specialties meet Pain Medicine

WELCOME LETTERS

Dear friends and colleagues,

It is my pleasure to welcome you to the 2nd International Forum on Pain Medicine (IFPM) which will take place in Guadalajara, Mexico, May 2006.

After the first successful meeting in Sofia, Bulgaria in May, 2005, the second Forum will continue to serve as a platform for multidisciplinary crosstalk between those who manage pain as only a part of their daily practice and those who devote the bulk of their time to pain medicine. Pain, particularly chronic pain, is a scourge that is rapidly coming to be seen as a disease in its own right.

The program of the 2nd International Forum on Pain Medicine will feature accessible frontal lectures focusing on the basics of pain, presentations on the various clinical manifestations associated with the major acute and chronic pain conditions, and elucidation of the very latest on pharmacological approaches and interventional techniques used for the management of chronic pain.
Forum sessions will also provide an opportunity for presentations of new techniques, and will create a platform for lectures on recent experience gained with state-of-the-art management approaches.

This International meeting is endorsed by AMETD, the Mexican Association for the Study and Treatment of Pain, by FEDELAT, the Federation of Latin American Pain Societies, and by WIP, the World Institute of Pain. The 2nd Forum will be a truly international platform, with key speakers from across the world addressing a vast spectrum of pain-related issues. The first IFPM was authorized to offer Continuing Medical Education (CME) credits. We plan to obtain similar status also for the 2nd IFPM.

Guadalajara is a magnificent city with plenty of tradition and great culture. It is the birthplace of Mariachi music and the Sombrero. It is a modern city, boasting several universities and academic institutions, and a population of 5 million. It is also accessible driving distance from Mexico City with its population of 20 million and, with direct flights from many locations in the US, Latin America, and in most cases only one stop from Europe.

Facilities and accommodations in Guadalajara compare with any luxury venue across the world. Guadalajara’s main Plaza, the Cathedral and the Degollado Theatre are impressive works of art, dating back many centuries, and are not to be missed. Nearby Tonalá a small picturesque town offers beautiful traditional craftsmanship as does the town of Tlaquepaque, also close by.

The Forum’s Local Organizing Committee has arranged a most interesting and unique social program to complement what promises to be a most exciting and rewarding professional event. Join us for the 2nd IFPM and enjoy the renowned Mexican hospitality and culture.

I look forward to greeting you in Guadalajara.

David Niv, M.D., FIPP
Chairman, Scientific Program Committee

Queridos amigos y colegas ,

David Niv, M.D., FIPP

Dear friends and guests,

It is with pleasure that I inform you about the forthcoming 2nd International Forum on Pain Medicine, in Guadalajara, Mexico May 25 -28, 2006.

Guadalajara is a very special city, called “City of the Roses”. It is an incredibly diverse and stately city with amazing qualities, both modern and historic, that embrace all who visit. As the second largest city in México and boasting a population of over 3 million, you are constantly reminded that Guadalajara is a busy metropolis, and a major Mexican business center. Although this city beats to a busy pace, things here have a way of seeming to always remain serene. There are many places in Guadalajara where you will feel like you have stepped back in time to a different era. Guadalajara is a city of monuments, parks and flowers, fountains and tree lined avenues. A city alive with subtle attractions that can keep the first time visitor entertained for weeks. Guadalajara's history dates to the 16th century, like a project of new Spain, and the rich heritage of México's colonial gem is evident everywhere you look.

We all know that medicine is part science, part business, part intuition and part experience. On occasion, the experience of others, usually specialists, is sought in the form of a consultation. The specialist interviews and examines the patient, makes diagnoses, recommends therapy and submits a bill. This interaction forms the doctor/patient contract or “relationship” as we call it. This is an occasion for all of the medical community, especially in Latin America, to enjoy the scientific program, which will present a comprehensive update of the major developments in the fields of pain. The forum will bring together the most prestigious experts in pain research and therapy, who will lecture on basic knowledge, pharmacology, novel modalities of treatment, interventional approaches and education across specialties. There will also be special highlights to test your knowledge in pain medicine, and special problems to improve pain management regionally.

The social activities will give you an extraordinary opportunity to visit and enjoy this city.

Members of the Local Organizing Committee will do their best to ensure that you have an enjoyable and interesting stay in beautiful Guadalajara.

I hope to see you in May 2006.
Sincerely,

Ricardo Plancarte Sanchez, M.D., FIPP
Chairman, Local Organizing Committee

Dear Colleagues, Friends and potential participants of the Second International Forum on Pain Medicine,

The Latin American Federation of Associations for the Study of Pain (FEDELAT) would like to welcome you all to this transcendental event for the study and treatment of pain in Latin America. We would also like to welcome our dear college mate and friend, Professor David Niv, who has been working in this singular endeavor namely the sharing and teaching of the basic concepts in pain care all around the world.
The picturesque city of Guadalajara has been, without doubt, a great selection for this first conference in Latin America, a city of unique beauty that we are sure will be very impressive for all of you who are visiting it for the first time. In the future, the organization will be able to select between many pretty places on our continent: Antigua in Guatemala, Cartagena de Indias in Colombia, Porto de Gallinas in Brazil, Punta del Este in Uruguay, Viña del Mar in Chile, Lima, Guayaquil, Panamá, San Juan de Puerto Rico, La Habana in Cuba and many other magnificent places disseminated all across our beautiful land that stretches from the Andean snows to the mysterious deserts of Guajira between Colombia and Venezuela.
Basic knowledge in regard to pain care, can not be the sole privilege of those dedicated exclusively to that specialty, but must be part of the overall scientific knowledge of all physicians or other health professionals that have to deal with the care and welfare of all human beings.
The FEDELAT supports any activity whose purposes are directed to the study and treatment of pain, as any other humanitarian one that implies directly or indirectly a better attention to the pain conditions of all people in Latin America and around the world.

Welcome!
Sincerely

Eduardo Ibarra M.D.
President
FEDELAT

¡Bienvenidos!
