DIG FOR A DAY AND VISIT TO A KIBBUTZ

MONDAY, JULY 26, 1999

In a fascinating half-day tour, combine two of Israel's most exciting experiences: a chance to participate in a hands-on archaeological excavation, and a visit to a kibbutz, the uniquely Israeli communal living settlement.

Descend the western slopes of the Judean Hills passing "Zora", Samson's home town and the Ela Valley where David the young shepherd slew Goliath the Philistine. Arrive at Tel Marisha in the area of Beit Guvrin, the ancestral home of King Herod. Vast underground labyrinths of man-made rooms are being systematically cleaned and give evidence of underground industrial complexes dating from the Hellenistic period. Remains of olive oil production, weaving installations, water cisterns and baths confirm a high level of material culture. This site offers a wealth of discoveries and practical experience for those who want to dig but have limited time. From the dig proceed to Kibbutz Beit Guvrin, where we tour and meet a member of the Kibbutz.

Return to hotel.

VIEW FROM THE TOP: WALK ON THE JERUSALEM WALLS

THURSDAY, JULY 29, 1999

An exciting view of the Old City of Jerusalem unveils as you climb to the highest point at the Citadel Museum. This fortress complex, dating from the time of the Maccabees, now houses the stimulating Museum of the History of Jerusalem (which we visit for an overview of the Holy City's growth and development). The steep ascent to the top of the walls leads to the roof of the Kishle, the infamous prison where leaders of the State of Israel were held in 1948. The route follows the present 16th century city walls, the Armenian Quarter and the Mount of Zion. The first settlements outside the walls, dating from the mid-1800's are visible, allowing for an understanding of modern Jerusalem's urban development. Follow down to Gan Tekumah and explore the Nea Church, built by the famous Byzantine Emperor Justinian.

Return to hotel.
