On behalf of the Local Organizing Committee, it is with great pleasure that we greet you to Mexico, one of the richest countries in culture and biodiversity. Mexico has a vibrant scientific community performing world-class research, yet the number of scientists is small considering the needs of the country. This is why one of our main tasks is to promote the scientific development of our university students, and the love and understanding of science among society in general, including the youngest. For our students and scientists, ISME-10 certainly provides an invaluable opportunity to widen their perspectives and to make new contacts, especially in disciplines such as microbial ecology and environmental microbiology of all ecosystems, which have a tremendous impact on the knowledge and understanding of our planet. We certainly believe that all of you will benefit from the cultural experience: not only by visiting our magnificent ancient ruins or colonial cities, or tasting our wide varieties of foods, but by interacting with Mexican microbiologists and graduate students.

In this respect, we will hold our 34th Mexican National Microbiology Meeting immediately after ISME-10, with a joint session in Spanish on Friday August the 27th, 2004. More information on microbiology in Mexico and on our national meeting can be found at www.microbiologia.org.mx

Cancun is an excellent destination for a scientific meeting in Mexico. One can find here the facilities for holding all sorts of reunions, large and small; together with a cadre of experienced professionals attending all related services, including audiovisuals, transportation and lodging. We certainly appreciate their efforts, which shall make our meeting go smoothly.

Finally, we hope that you will take advantage of this trip to visit the many cities, archaeological sites and nature spots that Mexico offers, to make this a most rewarding experience.
