Workshop: Neuropathologic Staging of Parkinson's Disease
- The workshop will be held on Monday, October 25th between 17:30
- 18:30.
Participants cannot just register for this workshop. They must register for the congress as well.
- Time: 1 hour
- Leader: Heiko Braak, M.D. (Institute for Clinical Neuroanatomy,
J.W. Goethe University, Frankfurt am Main, Germany)
- Cost of participation: Euro 90 based on a minimum of 15
participants. Seats are limited and will be served on a first-come,
first-serve basis. Please indicate your interest
to participate on the online registration form.
- Aim: In this workshop, you will be guided at the demonstration
microscope through a series of histological slides (100µm instead
of the usual 6 µm sections). You will have the opportunity to
see how the alpha-synuclein-immunoreactive intraneuronal pathology
begins in olfactory structures and the dorsal motor vagal nucleus
of the lower brain stem, follows an ascending route through the midbrain
(substantia nigra) and basal forebrain, and, finally, reaches the
cerebral cortex. Presymptomatic and symptomatic phases of the disorder
will be taken into consideration together with the implications of
neuropathological staging for potential early diagnosis of Parkinson's
disease-related olfactory, motor, and cognitive dysfunctions. There
will be enough time for questions, and it is hoped that input based
on your own clinical experience will truly "enliven" the
pathoanatomy for your co-viewers during the session.
