A Dig for a Day and Visit a Kibbutz
Monday, March 27, 2000, 09:00 - 13:00
In a fascinating half-day tour, combine two of Israel's most exciting experience; a chance to participate in a hands-on archeological excavation, and a visit to a kibbutz, the uniquely Israeli communal living settlement.
Descend the western slopes of the Judean Hills passing "Zora", Samson's hometown and the Ela Valley where David, the young shepherd, slew Goliath the Philistine. Arrive at Tel Maresha in the area of Beit Guvrin, the ancestral home of King Herod. Vast underground labyrinths of man-made rooms are being systematically cleaned and give evidence of underground industrial complexes dating from the Hellenistic period. Remains of olive oil production, weaving installations, water cisterns and baths confirm a high level of material culture. This site offers a wealth of discoveries and practical experience for those who want to dig but have limited time.
Proceed to Kibbutz Beit Guvrin, where a kibbutz member will explain their unique way of life.

B View From the Top: Walk on the Jerusalem Walls
Thursday, March 30, 2000, 09:00 - 13:00
An exciting view of the Old City unveils as you climb to the highest point at the Citadel Museum. This fortress complex, dating from the time of the Maccabees, now houses a stimulating museum detailing the history of Jerusalem. The steep ascent to the top of the walls leads to the roof of the Kishle, the infamous prison where leaders of the State of Israel were held in 1948. The route follows the present 16th century walls, through the Armenian Quarter, onto the Mount of Zion. The first settlements outside the walls, dating from the mid-1800's are visible, allowing for an understanding of modern Jerusalem's urban development. Continue down to Gan Tekumah and explore the Nea Church, built by the famous Byzantine Emperor, Justinian. Return to hotel.

Both tours depart from the lobby of the Jerusalem Renaissance Hotel at 09:00.
