Under the starlight African sky, set in a garden in the
Western Cape Wine Lands,
moyo at Spier is unlike any other restaurant
moyo - a loose translation of the Swahili word for soul.
Welcome to the world, where our soul a core and intricate fusion of African
flavors and design. Each moyo forming, growing in and around uniquely
individualized spaces of surprise and mystery.
Set to the call of the African drum, the body is reawakened to a sensory
extravaganza of unexpected delights and age old rituals such as face
painting, hand washing, henna tattoo art and story telling.
moyo in the making is about creating a history, but
more so a vision with a vibrant culture to support and explore it. It
is a threefold tapestry woven together with a delicate thread combining
design, food and entertainment. A mixture so strong and enticing that
it appeals to all the senses of the body and seductively toys with the
sixth sense, leaving it in a state of anticipation and heightened awareness
of “I want more…”

Adhering to the sense of touch and sight, organic like moyo Craft absorbs
their unique design ideas from nature. Finding the right texture and
natural feel of the material is of sorts their mission statement.
Virtually all items you will find in any moyo are manufactured by moyo
Craft and the moyo factory.
Magnificent steelworks, carved woods, the unique use of cowry shells
and various oxides forms the foundation of any moyo.
Helmut Nikkel our resident coppersmith, is a master of creating magic
through awesome lighting, fantasy like water features and pieces of art
cunningly disguised as lights and other useful artifacts in restaurant.
This adventure will take you through the Savannas of the South, along
the Coasts of the East, across the Deserts of the North and into the
Jungles of the West on a gastronomic journey.
Your taste buds will be tempted with the sweet scent of coriander and
fresh aroma of rose petals; cumin, paprika and saffron spice will edge
you to explore the sophistication of African cuisine.
Our diverse and eclectic a la carte menus and the abundance of the communal

THE PLACE
Bedouin tents and Gazebo’s are placed through out the garden and creates an almost nomad African Village. Watching over this Village is a 300year old Oak Tree, a testament to Africa’s greatness. Around this Gentle Giant bedlike couches are placed in a 360 radius for the best views of the warf. Growing from the earth, pulsing water features Crafted from copper are living works of art and a skillfully constructed tree house raises from the ground and takes you to the tree tops – an unparalleled dining experience.
The buffet span is an incredible 25m. The flavor of freshly cooked potjies, tagines and grilled meats fills the air with aromas of cumin, paprika and rosemary….
The aim and design of the buffet is for you to create your own meal, to experiment with the tastes and flavors of Africa.
Around embolas (fire barrel) at night burning through summer and winter, guests soon form an Indaba circle, sitting, chatting and solving all the mysteries of the world snugly wrapped in a colorful blanket provided.
This unexpected delight in the Wine Lands is set to the humming and ululating voices of 3rd World Bunfight, a performance company known for pushing the boundaries of African art to the limits.
