FOREIGN INVESTMENTS IN ISRAEL
- The Bank of Israel reported that total direct foreign investment in Israeli securities totaled $1.72 billion for the months of March and April. The hi-tech, industry and real estate sectors benefited most from the investment.
- Real Estate tycoon Donald Trump will invest a combined $300 million to construct a luxury exclusive 70-floor skyscraper in the Tel Aviv area.
- One of the wealthiest families in Southeast Asia, Indonesia's Sampoerna family, made a $200 million investment in Harel, Israel's largest health insurance group with a balance sheet of $5.7 billion in 2005.
- The Economist reported that Israel’s 2005 share of global foreign direct investment of 0.64% is a whopping 3.5 times higher than that of 2004, the second highest growth rate in the world.
- Forbes portrayed Israel in its Capital Hospitality Index of investor-friendly countries exceedingly well in the following categories: technology (92%), foreign restrictions (92%), wages & prices (99%), and investor protection (96%).
- The Bank of Israel announced that foreign investment in Israel in 2005 reached a total of $9.66 billion. This showed a 67% increase from $5.8 billion in 2004. Foreign direct investment reached $5.71 billion in 2005, which is 3.4 times the amount invested in 2004. Foreign investors made a significant contribution to the TASE in 2005, with foreign investment reaching a ten year high of NIS 2 billion.
- INSEAD, the prestigious European graduate business school renowned for its entrepreneurship studies programs, will open an international academic research center in Caesarea, Israel. Israel was chosen because of its vast and long-term success in entrepreneurship and business initiatives. Special emphasis will be placed on the country's start-up industry.
- Both Microsoft and Google announced plans to open additional R&D centers in Israel. Dr. Yoelle Maarek, Director of Engineering and Haifa Site Director at Google Inc, explained that the Haifa R&D center is only the first for the company and other development centers are planned. An additional R&D center is planned by Microsoft to be opened in Tel Aviv. Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer said, "Microsoft Israel's R&D centers will play an important role in our global R&D strategy."
